Invoco te, Deus meus

Motet for SSAATTBB (with soprano semi-chorus)

About the work

Invoco te, Deus meus was written in 2025 especially for the August 28th Choral Evensong at Westminster Abbey. Saint Augustine of Hippo – one of the most influential philosophers in the history of the Western world.

The music

Invoco te, Deus meus takes its inspiration from the Latin prayer “I call upon you, my God.” The music explores the character of invocation through a thick choral texture, moving between moments of quiet reflection and more intense, expressive writing.

The vocal writing is intended to allow the Latin text to remain central, with the musical material gradually building a sense of urgency and supplication before finding resolution.

Performance

Recordings are strictly prohibited at Westminster Abbey so no recording exists of that evening- however, Mumbles A Cappella have recorded the piece several times, including at Cathédrale Saint-Paul in Liège and Sint-Janskerk in Maastricht.
