Tempore Paschali (At the Time of Easter)

Anthem for SSATB

Liturgical / thematic use: Easter day and Eastertide

About the work

Tempore Paschali is a short, joyful Easter motet for unaccompanied SATB choir. Combining English text with the Latin proclamations Christus rex est and Christus resurrexit, the work celebrates the arrival of Easter and the victory of Christ over death.

The music

Beginning Maestoso, the music unfolds from a solemn proclamation into increasingly exuberant repetitions of “Alleluiah”, with a Più mosso section bringing greater rhythmic energy. A return to the opening material leads to the final declaration, “Christus resurrexit! Amen!” — a triumphant affirmation of the Resurrection.

A compact and celebratory Easter work, written to allow the sound of the unaccompanied choir itself to proclaim the joy of the Resurrection.
