Anthem/introit for SATB a cappella
About the work
Liturgical use: Advent
The text centres on St Paul’s exhortation to wake from sleep because salvation is drawing near:
“Brothers and sisters, you know what time has come,
how it is now for you to wake from sleep…”
It then moves to the particularly evocative Advent imagery:
“Night is far gone, day is near.”
The music
A contemplative Advent anthem for SATB (no divisi) voices a cappella, setting St Paul’s exhortation in Romans 13 to “wake from sleep” as salvation draws near. The imagery of night passing and day approaching gives the music a strong sense of anticipation and spiritual awakening. Quiet and restrained at first, the anthem gradually gathers intensity before returning to its opening call: “Brothers and sisters, you know what time has come.”
