Anthem for 2 soprano soloists and SATB choir
The poem ‘Winter Song’ was written in October 1917 by acclaimed war poet Wilfred Owen, but is rather unusual within Owen’s work because it is not a war poem in the conventional sense. It remained unpublished during his lifetime and was first collected in The Poems of Wilfred Owen in 1931.
The music
Using two solo sopranos to soar above the chorus, there is ocassional divisi to create a warmth and depth of sound in an attempt to match the themes of death, transformation, spiritual renewal and the return of colour.
