About the work

Dim Lle yn y Dafarn — No Room at the Inn — is a Welsh Christmas carol for unaccompanied SATB choir. It tells the familiar Christmas story from the perspective of Mary and Joseph, focusing on the poignancy of their rejection: there is no room at the inn, and the door is closed. The text moves from this simple human hardship to the mystery of Christ’s birth, “in the chill of night” beneath the stars.

The Welsh text gives the carol a particularly strong sense of place and tradition, while the simplicity of the words allows the emotional weight of the story to speak directly to the listener.

The music

The music is deliberately restrained and intimate. Marked Poco Lento at ♩ = 80, the carol opens quietly, with the voices entering gently and establishing a reflective atmosphere.

The repeated setting of “Dim lle yn y dafarn” becomes an important musical device, almost like a refrain. Against this repetition, the choir gradually unfolds the story: the absence of shelter, the cold night beneath the stars, and finally the revelation of the Messiah born in a humble stable.

The unaccompanied writing allows the changing vocal colours and harmonies to carry the drama. Particularly effective is the extended, sustained passage on “Ganwyd y Meseia” (“The Messiah was born”), before the music returns to the opening words. The final repetitions are marked with a ritardando, bringing the carol to a quiet and contemplative conclusion.

A quiet Christmas carol about rejection, humility and the extraordinary significance of a birth in the humblest of circumstances.
