About the work
Journey’s End is an instrumental work built around the idea of movement, arrival and reflection. It begins with a strongly purposeful character, marked “Determined” at ♩=120, with an insistent piano ostinato underpinning long, sustained lines in the winds. The effect is immediately one of forward momentum.
The music
What particularly strikes me is the journey from determination to acceptance. The opening is rhythmic and driven; the later music becomes increasingly spacious, and the final rallentando feels less like a conventional dramatic ending than an arrival — a gradual laying down of momentum.
There is an interesting contrast between the rhythmic drive of the piano, percussion, bass and lower strings and the longer melodic phrases of the upper instruments. The result is music that feels simultaneously restless and reflective — as though the destination is known, but the journey itself has left its mark.
